A pool pump is a centrifugal pump that normally incorporates a basket (filter) on the suction side of the pump. This suction basket serves two purposes:

1.  It strains the leaves and other large impurities from the intake water to prevent them from being drawn into the pump and causing the pump to not work as designed.
2. It provides a volume of water that helps the pump function as “self-priming”.   When a Sta-Rite or Pentair Pool pump is turned on, the water stored in the intake basket is pumped out of the pump housing, creating a vacuum in the suction line. This will pull water into the suction line, and assuming the suction line is properly connected to the pool, the pool water will fill the suction line. This process continues for the first minute or so as the water slowly displaces the air in the intake basket.  The pump then functions as designed.
